Thomas AT-602 Irons Reviewed by GRG

Thomas Golf's new iron launch of the AT 602 has the same patented alignment feature as there AT 505 irons, but the similarities end there. The AT 602 is a true player’s size iron, the company’s first such design. In contrast to game-improvement designs, the AT 602 has a classic shape with a much thinner top line, a moderate head size, and just a small amount of offset thru out the set.

This “small-cavity,” according to our testers, promotes a significant boost in performance. The AT 602 are extremely forgiving compared to other designs. Miss the sweetspot slightly and your shots will stay true to the intended line with little distance loss.

Our testers were very pleased with the workability and the soft feel. Because of the minimal off set we had no problem with working the ball for a fade or draw. Lofts on the AT 602’s are about average for players' irons. For those suited to the irons, distances have been above average to good with a controlled, arched trajectory. Backspin has been top rate.

All of our testers have found the look of AT 602’s to be pleasantly attractive with very clean lines. At address, they set up neatly in a moderately compact and neutral manner. Aim with the AT-602 has been made much easier with the top plane alignment bar, much like you would see on a putter. The shot patterns have been way above average.

We tested these irons with the Thomas standard steel shafts, and the new Thomas Golf graphite shafts. All the low scoring testers preferred the shot control of the high bend point steel shafts, and in contrast the average player’s who like to play smaller head irons preferred the graphite shaft’s that yielded more distance for there slower swing speed.

A large segment of players who are looking for a forgiving iron that will allow them to work the ball around a bit, and that will adequately accommodate improvements in their game the AT-602’s might be just the ticket.
