Thomas AT-460 Driver Review
Tester 1 We were not very excited to test the new larger AT-460 Titanium/Graphite Driver by Thomas Golf just because it was larger, but we sure changed our tune during the testing. The main reason was the extra confidence it gave to all our testers. Distance - With this larger headed driver we got very good results, above average distance with quite a few that went exceptionally far, from center face hit's. The flat top seemed to add strength to the face, delivering more power at impact, and the forgiveness of the large head and face did very well at improving the distance of mis-hits, the larger size increased the average distance of off center hit's. Accuracy -This AT 460 driver is perhaps the most accurate we have ever tested. The club head has a unique flat top that supports a straight gold aiming indicator which is parallel to the ground, much more useful than indicators we have seen on other clubs. The large size of 460cc also seems to give it plenty of forgiveness on miss-hits,without being too bulky looking for it's size. Feel -The feel at impact gave a sense of a solid quality construction, and the sound was the best we ever tested for a head size of 460 cc vs other drivers we tested of = size.If you enjoy this type of solid feed back, then you will like the Thomas AT 460.If you like a loud sound at impact, you would be better off with a different driver. Forgiveness - The AT-460 did well in this category. The large volume, wide face design, and graphite top was successful in keeping toe and heel shots straight, and without sacrificing much distance. A few of the testers found it helpful that their was a distinct sound difference between centered and off-centered hits. This gave a clear feedback as to what happened with the shot. Appearance - The head is made of pure 6AL-4V Titanium, polished on the face and sole, and painted on the top, back and sides with a black metallic-fleck paint with clear-coat. The flat top gives the club a strong look, like it's hungry to punch that golf ball, and also gives it a slimmer look so it doesn't seem as bulky as other jumbo drivers. We ordered our driver with a Men's Stiff-Flex graphite shaft and Thomas pro grip. The shaft was black with attractive gold logging, and the grip had a nice feel and helpful gold hand placement line for consistent gripping. Conclusion - Overall, the AT-460 driver was well above average, with its strong points being the unique aiming indicator, extra forgiveness, and impressive distance. An added advantage we appreciated was Thomas Golf's free custom fitting service and fast turn around time. We were very impressed with the AT 460 driver model of 4 different lofts of 9,10.5,13, and 16 degree, also check out the offset models that helped our testers who block or slice the ball to the right. For a quality driver with great customer service, it would be hard to find a better deal for the price. The first one I experimented with was the AT460TS which features a 460cc head, the largest allowable by the USGA. The first trait to stand out on the club to me was the golden line on the top of the crown to align the shot properly. I found this particularly useful as I was able to set the club to the target and then simply align my feet, hips, and shoulders to the line. I found the most interesting aspect of the AT460TS driver to be its Advanced Top Plane Technology. Most driver faces and heads are curved which can make alignment difficult but that's not the sole purpose of the flat top plane. It also provides extra support during impact where classic domed top drivers flex during contact which results in a loss of energy transfer. Thomas Golf's flat top plane nullifies much of this unnecessary flex so that more of the energy of the golf swing can be transferred to the ball ultimately leading to longer drives. The face of the drivers is 2.5mm thick which provides a powerful trampoline effect that goes well to complement the flat top plane technology. As with all of Thomas Golf clubs, these drivers are fully compliant with all USGA rules. I also tried the offset model, AT460TO. If you have the popular tendency to slice the ball or have trouble getting much height on your drives then this driver might be better suited for you. The offset helps to get your hands leading through the shot and squaring up the club face during that crucial moment of impact. Also, since the club head is further back in relation to the shaft, the center of gravity is placed further back which results in slightly higher ball flights. All of the AT460 drivers are available in left and right hand and men's, women's and senior flexes in graphite. The senior and women's flexes have a specialized low kick point to help achieve a higher ball flight. There are also steel shaft options available for those with very high swing speeds or those willing to sacrifice some distance for accuracy. The shafts are all frequency and flex-matched to the highest standards to ensure maximum accuracy and consistency. Overall, Thomas Golf's AT460 drivers are top quality clubs that perform as well, if not better, than many of the more popular (and expensive) brand names. If you're looking for a new driver, they are definitely worth checking out. |
